Why payments get stuck in “pending” and how to handle them

Occasionally a customer completes a payment but their bank or the UPI network takes longer than usual to confirm it. The payment is pending: not failed, not yet successful.

Common reasons

  • A temporary delay at the customer’s bank
  • The customer closed the app before the confirmation screen
  • Network issues on the customer’s phone

What UPIPayments does

Open payments are checked with the provider again and again, often at first and less often later, by the cron job. The checkout keeps polling while the customer waits, and providers also notify us directly. When the final answer arrives, your webhook fires and the customer’s result page updates.

What you should do

Fulfil orders only on payment.success. Show the customer a friendly “we are confirming your payment” message for pending orders. If a payment finally fails after money left the customer’s account, their bank returns it automatically.
