Transaction charges explained: what they are and how UPIPayments charges them

Transaction charges are the fee a merchant pays on a payment (elsewhere you may see them called MDR, the merchant discount rate). In UPIPayments your package decides them, and many packages have none.

Three parts

  • Percent, for example 0.5% of the amount
  • Fixed, a flat amount per payment
  • Cap, the most you can be charged on one payment

Examples with 0.5%, cap ₹25, 18% GST

PaymentChargeGSTTotal fee
₹1,000₹5.00₹0.90₹5.90
₹20,000₹25.00 (capped)₹4.50₹29.50

When it is charged

Only on successful live payments, taken from your prepaid wallet. Failed, expired and staging payments are never charged. The fee is fixed when the order is created and shown in the API reply.
