Every UPI transfer gets a UTR (Unique Transaction Reference), usually a 12-digit number. It appears in the customer’s UPI app as “UTR”, “UPI Ref. No.” or “Transaction ID”, and in your bank statement next to the credit.
Why the UTR matters
- It proves a specific payment happened.
- It lets you match a bank credit to an order.
- It is what banks ask for when a customer raises a dispute.
How UPIPayments uses it
With PhonePe, Paytm, Razorpay and Cashfree the UTR arrives automatically from the provider and is saved on the payment. With Direct UPI, where you accept money on a plain UPI ID, the customer enters the UTR on the checkout after paying, and you confirm it from UTR verifications once you see the money in your app.
Protection against reuse
A UTR can settle only one payment per merchant in UPIPayments. If someone tries to reuse the reference of an old payment for a new order, it is refused automatically.
