Every UPI payment ends the same way, with the customer entering their UPI PIN, but there are three ways to start one.
1. QR code
The customer scans a code with any UPI app. A dynamic QR carries the exact amount and an order reference, so the customer cannot pay the wrong amount and you can match the payment to the order. This is ideal on a laptop screen or at a counter.
2. Intent
On a phone, a button opens the customer’s UPI app directly with your details and the amount already filled in. It is the fastest flow on mobile because nothing has to be typed or scanned.
3. Collect request
The customer types their UPI ID and receives a request in their app to approve. It is useful when the customer is on a different device, though many apps now favour intent and QR.
Which one should you offer?
Offer more than one. UPIPayments shows a dynamic QR and app buttons for Direct UPI accounts, and through PhonePe, Paytm, Razorpay and Cashfree the provider’s own page offers intent, QR and collect. Customers simply use whatever is easiest for them.
