SSL (more precisely TLS) encrypts the connection between a visitor and your site. Browsers show a padlock and the address starts with https://.
Why it matters
- Privacy: logins, forms and customer details cannot be read on the way.
- Trust: browsers warn visitors about sites without HTTPS.
- Search: search engines prefer secure sites.
- Payments: payment providers expect HTTPS for callbacks and webhooks.
After installing a certificate
Redirect all http:// traffic to https://, update the site URL in your application, and set a reminder if your certificate does not renew automatically.
